As discussed in previous blog postings here, constantly elevated levels of the body’s stress hormone cortisol can have deleterious consequences for both your physical and mental well-being over time. Constant cortisol streaming through your blood can lead to forgetfulness and insomnia in the short run and then to cardiovascular and other problems down the line.  Therefore, it’s important to do what is necessary to lower your body’s cortisol levels and get them back within reasonable levels as quickly as possible.


While meditation and exercise are great ways to get your stress levels down, many folks are turning to supplements to help out with this all-too-common problem.  According to Bodybuilding. com, there are definite benefits to shopping for supplements that can reduce your cortisol levels both naturally and safely. Vitamin C is one of the most beneficial such supplements as a study showed that just one extra gram of vitamin C taken a day improved weightlifters’ cortisol-to-testosterone ratio by 20 percent.  Other supplements that can also battle the negative effects of cortisol on your body include L-Glutamine (10-15 grams) and chromium, which stabilizes blood sugar levels—which in turn reduces cortisol levels in the blood. Other supplements to keep on your shopping include B vitamins, ginger and cayenne (yep, that spicy stuff found in peppers).

According to the Dr. Oz Show, you can also go shopping for such stress-reducing foods as spinach, beans and barley.  While all of this is important, it must be balanced out with exercise, rest and de-stressing your life as much as possible and learning to cope with the inevitable life stressors you will encounter.
